ADVICE · OPENERS

What to say in a first message.

"Hey" has maybe a one-in-ten chance of a reply, and the reply it gets is "hey." You can do dramatically better with thirty seconds of effort, because almost nobody spends thirty seconds of effort.

The three-part opener

Every first message that works does three things:

  1. Reference one specific thing from their profile. Not their looks — a photo location, a hobby, the band shirt, the dog's name. This proves you read the profile, which instantly puts you ahead of nearly every other message they got today.
  2. React genuinely. One sentence of your actual opinion or experience. "I did that same hike in the rain and regretted every choice" beats "cool pic."
  3. End with an easy question. Easy is the key word. "What's the story behind the parrot?" gets answered. "What are your life goals?" gets skipped.

Examples you can adapt

"Okay, the photo at the ramen place — is that Tatsu? I have a ranked list of every ramen spot in town and I need to know where this falls."
"A profile that mentions both camping and opera is a first for me. Which one wins on a free Saturday?"
"Your dog looks like he has strong opinions. What's his most unreasonable one?"

Notice none of these are clever, exactly. They're specific, warm, and easy to answer. That's the whole trick.

What kills a first message

If they don't reply

One polite follow-up after a few days is fine — a new topic, not "??". After that, let it go. Non-replies are about timing, inbox volume, and a hundred things that aren't you. The math only works if you keep meeting new people.

Better inputs, better conversations. Apps that match on compatibility give you more to work with in that first message — eharmony's profiles are practically opener material.
