Most people on dating apps are exactly who they say they are. But romance scams cost victims hundreds of millions of dollars every year, and the scripts are predictable once you know them. Here are the seven signs, roughly in the order you'll encounter them.
1. The photos are a little too good
Professional-grade photos, model looks, and only three of them. Do a reverse image search (Google Lens on your phone — long-press the photo). If the same face shows up under a different name, report and move on.
2. The profile is thin and generic
"I love travel, family and honest people." No specific places, jobs, teams, or hobbies — because specifics can be checked, and scam profiles are made in bulk.
3. They fall for you at superhuman speed
Declarations of deep feeling inside the first week — often inside the first day — are the single most reliable scam signal. Real interest builds; scripts sprint, because time is money.
4. They want to leave the app immediately
"I never check this app, message me on WhatsApp." Scammers move fast to a channel the dating app can't monitor, so their account survives after yours reports them. Staying on the app for the first couple of weeks costs you nothing.
5. They can never video call
The camera is always broken, the connection always bad, the timing always wrong — for weeks. Anyone genuinely interested in you can find ten minutes for a video call. Make it a personal rule: no video call, no emotional investment.
6. The life story is dramatic and distant
Deployed overseas, on an oil rig, widowed with a child at boarding school — professions chosen because they explain why meeting in person is impossible. Sympathy plus distance is the setup for step seven.
7. Money enters the conversation
An emergency, a frozen bank account, a can't-miss crypto opportunity, a plane ticket to finally visit you. It starts small to test you. Here is the only rule you need:
Never send money — or gift cards, or crypto — to someone you haven't met in person. No exceptions, no matter how good the story or how long you've been talking.
What to do when you spot one
- Report the profile in the app — it protects the next person, and reputable apps do act on reports.
- Block and don't announce it. Confronting a scammer just teaches them a better script.
- If money already moved, contact your bank immediately and file a report at reportfraud.ftc.gov. It happens to smart people every day — the shame is the scammer's, not yours.
